The Government has made an announcement today regarding a significant development for battery storage with the introduction of a zero-VAT rating on these technologies and associated works.
The decision to zero-rate VAT on all battery storage installations, not limited to those installed alongside solar panels, is expected to reduce the cost of battery storage for homeowners by 20%. This move is anticipated to drive increased adoption, enabling more households to save on energy bills and transition to renewable energy, as per the MCS Foundation
Prior to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, the MCS Foundation, in collaboration with ten industry representatives and environmental organizations, appealed to the Chancellor to implement zero-rating for VAT on all battery installations.
The changes will take effect in Feb 2024.
