2,000+ Energy Saving Systems Installed | 10+ Years of Experience | Active in Scotland since 2018

My heating costs are climbing...

And Traditional Systems Just Can’t Keep Up

Whether it’s electric, oil, or old gas boilers, most homes and commercial buildings in Scotland are stuck with heating systems that cost a fortune to run (especially in winter).

Sound familiar?

  • Monthly bills that feel like a second mortgage
  • Constant radiator tweaking to find the “right” temperature
  • Cold spots, slow heating, noisy systems
  • Stress about future energy price hikes

That’s exactly why thousands of home and business owners are switching to air source heat pumps.

These systems don’t just replace your old boiler.

They transform how your property heats up using renewable energy from the air to deliver steady, efficient warmth with far lower running costs.

Thanks Chris and team for a great job. The install was a bit more complicated than the guys though it would be at first, but they worked through it with no problems. A very neat job.

But how do these heat pumps do that?

How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Actually Work

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) don’t generate heat the old-fashioned way: they pull it from the air outside (even when it’s really cold) and move it into your home or building.

It’s like a fridge in reverse.

Here’s what that means for you:

  • Works year-round (even in Scottish winters)
  • No more boiler breakdown stress
  • Consistent, even warmth throughout your property
  • Far cheaper to run than electric, LPG or oil heating

If your home or business is well-insulated, an ASHP can cut your heating bills by up to 60%, while making your property more energy efficient and future-ready.

What are the core benefits for me?

Why More Scots Are Switching to Heat Pumps

This isn’t just about saving money; it’s about finally having a heating system that works with your life, not against it.

  • Predictable Comfort, Every Day: No more cold mornings or waiting for the heating to “kick in”. ASHPs deliver consistent warmth across your whole area, even when temps drop below zero.
  • Major Bill Reductions: Most clients see their heating costs drop by 30–60%. That’s hundreds saved every year, especially with energy prices still unpredictable.
  • Boosts Property Value: Installing an ASHP can significantly improve your EPC rating — making your property more efficient, more attractive to buyers, and compliant with evolving legislation.
  • A Smarter Climate Choice ASHPs are low-carbon and compatible with Scotland’s green energy future. Plus, they help cut your home’s or business’s footprint with no sacrifice to comfort.

Is an Air Source Heat Pump Right for You

Most people assume these systems are only for new builds or fancy eco homes. Not true.

We install high-efficiency heat pumps in:

  • Detached & semi-detached homes
  • Flats with adequate outdoor space
  • Rental properties looking to boost EPC scores
  • Shops, cafés, warehouses & office units
  • Hospitality venues & care facilities

You don’t need a new roof. You just need a property that holds heat reasonably well and the will to stop bleeding cash every winter.

We have had our six infra red panels for about seven years. We had four old storage heaters, which we inherited when we bought the house. They were totally inadequate for the property in the northern highlands. We decided we had to replace them but what with. Searches via the tinternet came up with the infra red alternative. We found Scottish Energy Saving as being a supplier of panels in Edinburgh Scotland. We arranged a home visit and Chris Taylor arrived to do the survey. He explained everything to us and answered all our questions. We haven't looked back since. Going from four storage heaters to six panels has not been more expensive with each panel having its own thermostat, they are constantly turning on and off through out the day. Visitors always ask what sort of heating do we have, its lovely and warm in here. We have three mirror panels and three white plain panels. All very thin and blend into the back ground. A very helpful and good company to deal with. We will happily use them again. Thank you.

Owner's reply
Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Ben. We’re delighted Chris’s survey and explanations made the switch from your old storage heaters easy and that the six infrared panels with individual thermostats have kept your home warm, efficient, and visually unobtrusive. We appreciate your recommendation and look forward to helping you again.

• What made you look into infrared heating for the church? o Our ageing gas central heating in our beautiful A Listed church building was on its last legs and failed to heat the space adequately, costing a fortune in the process. • Why did you choose Scottish Energy Saving? o We had researched a number of different radiant solutions, but had a lot of false starts where potential suppliers seemed interested but then disappeared, not returning calls, leaving us frustrated and not knowing why. Scottish Energy Saving was supportive from the start, sometimes overly so, before we were quite ready. They maintained steady contact over several months until we had the various permissions and finance in place to start the project. • How did you find the overall experience with our teams? o All of the people we encountered were very personable and worked tirelessly. My only criticism was that the installation electricians were not consistent, so teams changed and had to acquaint themselves with the building and its nuances. This resulted in some delay with some phases of the installation. • What stood out most during the installation? o The willingness to work with the restrictions and challenges that our building presented while remaining sympathetic to and respectful of its purpose. • How is the system performing in the space so far? o The 9 x 3.6kW and 6 x 600W infrared radiant system is performing well and gives us much more flexibility and comfort than many thought possible. It has proven to be very popular, even from the trial stages, encouraging us to press on towards the full installation. It has already saved hundreds of pounds in the remaining gas system, which is currently required for fabric protection, as it has reduced the necessity of large pre-heat times. We do pre-heat the radiant heating for maximum comfort, but only up to 4 hours – the gas system would be pre-heated up to 24 hours and beyond. In short, we can create a comfortable space using around 5 hours-worth of energy that would previously have required up to 24 hours. We also don’t need to heat the whole space as the heaters are angled to target seated areas and they can be individually programmed and scheduled. • Would you recommend us to other organisations? o I would recommend Scottish Energy Saving as I believe that they install quality products to a good standard. They have learned a lot from the complexity and demands of our historic and architecturally significant church building, and now include a detailed survey as part of their costings to help avoid some of the difficulties that we encountered. Our permissions process meant that we had to phase the installation, which no-doubt was a challenge to achieving continuity of the installation team, but all the staff who attended were flexible, hard working and tidy. The issues encountered were resolved pretty quickly to our satisfaction. A challenging but ultimately successful project, delivering a sensitive, flexible, efficient and effective heating system in a complex environment.

Owner's reply
Thank you for this thorough and thoughtful review — we’re delighted the system is delivering the comfort, flexibility and cost savings you needed. I’m sorry for the disruption caused by changing electrician teams during the phased works and appreciate your patience while we resolved those issues. We now include a detailed survey in our costings and are working to improve continuity of installation teams on complex, phased projects. Thank you for recommending Scottish Energy Saving and for trusting us with your historic church.

It was time to replace my 20 year old boiler, at the same time I was also looking for a solar / battery / grid powered hot water system to run my domestic water for washing and showering, a call from Chris at SES not only saved me money by purchaseing a Sunamp battery system and a smaller 15kw boiler, Chris also arranged for a plumber and a local electrician, in my eyes the fitment and pipework were a work of art, being a retired engineer I appreciated the time that was taken by Davie and his apprentice to install the units also working a 12 hour shift to ensure we had hot water and gas that day, the electrician was also very professional, now the systems are up and running I am looking forward to reduced utility bills. I would most definitely recommend Scottish Energy Saving and more than happy to respond to any questions, well done Chris and his team.

We have had a Solar Assisted Heat Pump and Battery Storage installed by Scottish Energy Saving. It has been a very straightforward process. Chris explained the systems and our options very clearly; he is pleasant, courteous, and very easy to work with. The electricians, on both occasions, were excellent - their work is of the highest standard, and they were extremely careful and courteous whilst working in our house. We are delighted with the results!

Welcome had this company in a few years ago to give us a complete new heating system. These were thin panels that could go on your walls or ceilings and, at that time they came in 3 finishings gloss black glass, white plastic or mirrored glass. They can be controlled individually or from 1 base station. When the guys came to install the system they were extremely polite, hard working and were very tidy, hoovering up every last spec of dust. I would highly recommend this company for anything energy saving.

Owner's reply

This company is keen to take your money, poor advice and dont take time to do client care or aftercare.

Owner's reply
We are disappointed to read this review, as it does not accurately reflect the efforts we have made to resolve your concerns. Since being made aware of the issues you've raised, we have repeatedly attempted to contact you by phone and message over a number of weeks to discuss the matter and agree a resolution. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, we have been unable to establish meaningful communication. It is difficult to provide aftercare or resolve outstanding issues when we are unable to engage with the customer. The suggestion that we are "only interested in taking your money" is one we strongly reject. Scottish Energy Saving has built its reputation on quality workmanship, honest advice, and supporting customers long after installation. We take every concern seriously and always strive to reach a fair and practical resolution wherever possible. Our offer to assist remains unchanged. Rather than debating the matter publicly, we would much prefer to work with you directly to bring it to a satisfactory conclusion. Please get in touch at your convenience, and we will prioritise your case to ensure every reasonable step is taken to resolve your concerns.

Our boiler became unmaintainable and we were getting increasingly unhappy with our old kerosene fueled system before it finally gave up. We wanted a clean, efficient heating solution. The team were efficient and thoughtful guys, who worked hard to get the heating working as soon as possible. The new heat pump works perfectly, the house is a nice even temperature. And it looks amazing, adding substantially to the value of the house. 10/10

SES have fitted infrared heaters at your church and it is finally warm!!. Before then we had inadequate heating and a very cold church. Chris and the team were all extremely professional, and quick to install the heating system. They worked with us to determine the best place for the heaters and, when there was a slight issue after installation, they replied to our call quickly and returned immediately to rectify. The new heating means that we can now fully utilise the building. We would definitely recommend SES.

Frequently Asked Questions

1How does an air source heat pump work?
Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) work in exactly this way - they take the ambient air temperature, and use that to provide heating (and sometimes cooling) for buildings. Despite the often chilly Scottish weather, even modern ASHPs are able to extract heat from the air effectively and anywhere up to temperatures well below freezing.

After being absorbed, the refrigerant gets compressed, which causes it to become very hot. A heat exchanger then takes the heat inside and distributes it throughout a building by blowing heated air through fan systems. In warmer months, the ASHP reverses this operation to remove heat from within a building and release it outside, providing indoor cooling.

Across Scotland, an ASHP has many advantages, like lower energy costs when compared to your traditional heating methods - electric resistance heaters or oil boilers. It will also help reduce carbon emissions, supporting Scotland's climate change objectives.

Interested in getting your own system? Request your energy assessment and quote now
2Can you use an air source heat pump combined with solar panels?
Combining an air source heat pump with solar panels is increasingly recognised as a practical and sustainable solution for enhancing energy efficiency in buildings. Solar panels harness sunlight to generate electricity, which can then power the ASHP. This synergy allows buildings to reduce their reliance on grid electricity, lowering both energy costs and carbon emissions.

The integration of ASHPs with solar panels works seamlessly to maximise energy efficiency throughout the day. Solar panels produce electricity during daylight hours, aligning well with the operational needs of ASHPs, which typically operate year-round to provide heating and cooling as required. By utilising solar-generated electricity to power the ASHP, the system becomes more self-sufficient and environmentally friendly.

Beyond immediate cost savings on energy bills, this combination contributes significantly to environmental sustainability. ASHPs are already more efficient than traditional heating systems, and when powered by renewable solar energy, they further reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with heating and cooling buildings. This dual approach also enhances energy independence for homeowners and businesses, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting resilience against fluctuating energy prices.

3How does an air source heat pump installation work?
A survey starts with an investigation where the perfect area for fixing the ASHP unit will be resolved. These factors take into account accessibility for maintenance, noise considerations and best access to outdoor air.

Installation starts by fitting the ASHP unit (usually located outside and can tap into external air). Since nothing compares with the level of importance regarding our installation site rooms, bonded refrigerant and electric lines are run to connect the ASHP from indoor components. In heating mode, the outdoor ambient air absorbs heat from these lines, which then gets pumped to the indoors into remote coils and, for cooling purposes, vice versa.

An outdoor compressor/condenser is plumbed to a coil or heat exchanger installed inside the building, largely within its heating ducts. This part is responsible for circulating the heated or cooled air throughout your home. Other controls and thermostats are also included where necessary to regulate temperature settings for a more balanced heating process.

Correct installation is very important if you want to get the best performance (and efficiency) out of your ASHP. A certified technician checks connections, evaluates refrigerant levels, and tests the system to ensure it operates properly. After the installation, homeowners are instructed on how to use and look after their ASHP to ensure the maximum lifespan of both and maximise potential energy savings.

5What is the most ideal air source heat pump?
The ideal air source heat pump varies depending on factors such as climate, building size, and specific heating and cooling needs. Generally, the ideal ASHP combines high efficiency with reliability and is appropriately sized for the building it serves.

Key considerations include the Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) , which indicates efficiency in heating mode, and the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling. Look for ASHP models with high SCOP and EER ratings, as they indicate lower energy consumption and operating costs over time.

Moreover, noise levels are crucial, especially for residential installations. Modern ASHPs are designed to operate quietly, ensuring minimal disruption.

Additionally, compatibility with existing heating systems and controls can simplify integration and optimise performance. Some ASHPs also offer advanced features like variable-speed compressors, which enhance efficiency by adjusting operations to meet changing heating demands.
